Identity Bio Accoustic AI

Image Description

At Naturalis, they are researching and developing AI applications that can be used to analyse the sound (and therefore behaviour) of animals.

The lead researcher of this project, Dr. Dan Stowell, asked me if I wanted to design the visual identity of this project. I didn't have to think about that. A project that is right up my street, there are few projects that make me happier than projects like this. I made a number of illustrations for this visual identity that were animated by the web designer, Liesbeth Smit of The Online Scientist (who by the way was great to work with!).

“Animals make sounds that convey so much information. How can we use this to help monitor and protect wildlife? In our research programme we want to make sense of animal sounds using AI.

The biodiversity crisis is coming into focus. Yet, data for monitoring wild animal populations are still incomplete and uncertain. And there are still big gaps in our understanding of animal behaviour and interactions.

Sound recording is a cheap, rapid, powerful way to monitor many animals. Modern machine learning can dramatically improve its scale and precision.

Can AI-powered acoustic monitoring radically improve our understanding of wild animals and how to protect them?

We develop new AI methods and new hardware-software integrations, directly within the context of acoustic wildlife monitoring. At the same time, we investigate behaviour/ecology monitoring of selected target species in their own habitats.”
