3 Oktober Vereniging
Campaign image
Several years ago, this illustration served as the campaign image for that year's 3e of October celebration also known as ‘Leids Ontzet.’ On this date centuries ago, the city was liberated from a long siege by The Spanish occupiers. The theme of this particular year was Young Learned. Legit design agency did the design.
Children from Leiden are involved in the celebrations from an early age. Round the fair, singing at the Mini Choral or one of the other many children's activities organised in the city. So I decided to make a girl in a much too big suit. In the background, the University building can be seen as a reference to the relationship between
Leids Ontzet and the university (William of Orange, the first King of The Netherlands, gave it as a gift to Leiden in thanks for its heroic resistance against the Spaniards in 1575).
